Gareth Evans

"Each piece of artwork that leaves my studio must reach my perfectionist quality threshold.  Every time someone digs deep to purchase an artwork I have created, it touches me. I can spend hours applying gold leaf to a piece, but I remind myself that someday, someone, will treasure this in their home and what a privileged position that puts me in".
Born in Singapore, brought up in a remote Welsh valley and now living in the north west of England, Gareth (aka The Trunk of Funk) is a mixed media artist whose work is gathering increased interest from contemporary art collectors in the UK and abroad.

Utilising a range of techniques from photography to digital to traditional brush his work is influenced by childhood memories, an interest in design, vintage textiles, street art and an O.C.D. attention to detail.  Unconstrained by the need to conform to traditional codes he employs whatever skills and materials needed to achieve the desired result.

His series 'Urban Geisha' draws upon his influences and interest in materials, colour and texture to create 21st Century graphic versions of the traditional Geisha.  The influence of street art is obvious as is his interest in Eastern symbolism and imagery.  Each piece is hand crafted as layers of Metal Leaf, acrylics, Hanko stamps, Japanese postage stamps and 3D relief tiles are woven into the artwork. In addition, Evans's butterfly artworks have captured the

imagination of collectors and cover the genres of books, music, film and beyond. Each piece is meticulously created by hand from the edging of each butterfly, to the 8 layers of lacquer, to the final laydown.

'The original idea behind the butterflies was to create an artwork to celebrate my dad, Trevor and his literary collection. He was an English teacher and collected and cherished books throughout his long life. I photographed each book, stains and all, and 'My Father's Books' was created. Each piece I create connect me to my childhood and to my father. It's a real labour of love'.

Evans work is collected in the UK and abroad. He has pieces sitting in the collections of legends in the field of music and film and also high profile industry leaders.
