Inspiration
This artwork was inspired by Athena, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom and victory, war, civilisation and crafts. She was one of the twelve Olympian gods and goddesses and was considered one of the most important deities in the Greek pantheon. Athena was associated with various virtues, including wisdom, intelligence, reason, courage, inspiration, and justice. Often depicted wearing a helmet and carrying a shield, spear, or owl, all symbols of her wisdom, martial prowess, and strategic thinking. The owl was a sacred animal to Athena and was often depicted with her. It was a symbol of wisdom and knowledge, and it represented Athena's ability to see
and understand things that others could not. This association with wisdom is likely due to the fact that owls were observed by ancient people to be nocturnal creatures with exceptional vision and hearing, which made them seem wise and mysterious. She was revered by many ancient Greeks as a protector of their cities and as a source of guidance and inspiration. Often depicted in art and literature as a powerful and wise goddess who stood up for justice and defended the oppressed. Athena was also the patron goddess of the city of Athens, which was named after her and believed to have gifted the city with the olive tree, which became a symbol of peace,
prosperity, and civilization.
Technique
Athena's Victory (Under The Moon) XS was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, an illustration of a barn owl and sketches of the moon and it's lunar craters. After coating the handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negative is then contact printed onto the paper by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The print is then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. It can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once the image is fixed it is hand finished with 6-carat white gold leaf.
