Biography

Alexandra Gallagher is known for surreal, symbol-led imagery that draws on memory, imagination and personal experience. Her work has been exhibited internationally and recognised through prize exhibitions including Saatchi Showdown Surrealism, the Secret Art Prize and the London Contemporary Art Prize.

Alongside her gallery practice, she has collaborated with brands and organisations including Coast Fashion, Crown Paint and Grand Designs, reflecting a practice that moves between fine art and wider cultural contexts.

At Art of Protest Gallery, collectors can explore a curated selection of original works and limited edition prints.

How Alexandra Gallagher Creates Her Work

Alexandra Gallagher's practice begins with decoupage-led image making, combining found imagery with digital composition. This early stage allows ideas to be tested, reworked and repositioned before being taken further.

Once a composition is resolved, pieces are developed through paint, texture and mixed media. Layers are built gradually, with each stage responding to what came before rather than replacing it. The result is work with depth and surface variation that reflects the time invested in its creation.

Images are developed over time rather than completed in one sitting. Elements are added, removed and refined as the work progresses. It is a considered and time-intensive process.

Decoupage, Art History and Feminist Context

Gallagher's use of decoupage carries a deliberate historical reference. In the nineteenth century, decoupage was one of the few creative practices considered socially acceptable for women, often categorised as decorative or domestic rather than recognised as fine art. As a result, many women working in these mediums were excluded from traditional art histories.

By choosing decoupage as a core part of her contemporary practice, Gallagher draws attention to this legacy of exclusion. The technique becomes more than a formal choice. It acts as a quiet feminist statement, reclaiming a historically marginalised process and repositioning it within a contemporary fine art context.

This approach sits within a broader lineage of artists who have deliberately used materials associated with domestic or "feminine" craft to challenge traditional hierarchies. As with Tracey Emin's use of needlepoint, the material itself carries meaning, connecting personal experience, gender and history.

Materials, Mediums and Techniques

The work spans painting, decoupage, printmaking and mixed media. Digital processes are used alongside traditional materials, allowing precision where needed while preserving physical texture and surface detail.

Original works often involve extensive hand-finishing, with visible layering across the surface. Variations in tone, texture and detail emerge naturally through this approach. Limited edition prints are produced from these compositions using high-quality print methods designed to preserve colour, clarity and structure.

Original Art by Alexandra Gallagher

Original artworks represent the most labour-intensive part of the practice. Each piece is created as a one-off, with surface depth and material variation that cannot be replicated.

These works are well suited to collectors looking for unique pieces with strong physical presence. Originals often reward closer viewing, particularly where texture, layering and detail play a central role.

If you're not able to visit the gallery in person, the team can offer guidance remotely and show works in detail over video when needed.

Limited Edition Prints

Limited edition prints offer a more accessible way to collect the work while retaining the strength of the original compositions. Editions are produced using giclée printing, a fine art process known for its colour accuracy, detail and archival longevity.

Each print is carefully colour-matched to the original artwork to ensure consistency across the edition. These works are particularly well suited to collectors seeking clarity and impact, whether for residential or commercial spaces.
