Bronze & Wood
Star Men presents a trio of wooden figures adorned with ornate bronze embellishments, a work that straddles the line between sacred object and science fiction. These enigmatic forms are conceived as relics from an unknown civilisation possibly terrestrial, possibly otherworldly whose cultural and symbolic systems are lost to time.
Each figure possesses a distinct presence, bearing what might be interpreted as ceremonial armor, advanced technology, or ritual tools. They appear simultaneously ancient and futuristic, recalling the aesthetics of both tribal sculpture and speculative spacefaring mythologies. The ambiguity of their role shaman, warrior, priest, emissary leaves their identity suspended, inviting viewers to project their own interpretations onto the work.
The piece draws from and critiques the conventions of museological display and pseudo-archaeology, fabricating a false ethnography with deliberate seriousness. These are not literal artefacts, but imaginative constructions: fragments of a fictional past (or future) that explore how objects accrue meaning through context, materiality, and narrative.
By treating these figures as if they were sacred relics objects of awe, devotion, or fear Star Men prompts reflection on how we mythologize the unfamiliar. It is an invitation to consider how we create significance around form and material, and how easily history can be shaped, or invented, through the lens of mystery.
